WHAT IS ISI MARK?

The ISI Mark is a quality certification provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s official standards organization. This mark assures consumers that a product meets stringent benchmarks for quality, safety, and dependability. When you see the ISI Mark on a product, it means it complies with the specific Indian Standards (IS) set by BIS and has passed thorough testing and evaluation processes.

Through its Product Certification Scheme, the Bureau of Indian Standards enables manufacturers to earn an ISI Mark Certificate, fostering confidence among consumers and prioritizing their safety. While the certification is optional for many products, it’s compulsory for essential items such as electrical appliances, Portland cement, LPG cylinders, and automotive tires. At present, 679 products fall under the mandatory ISI Mark Registration requirement. Even for products where certification isn’t required, securing an ISI Mark Certificate gives manufacturers a distinct advantage, showcasing their dedication to upholding top-tier quality and adhering to regulatory standards.

STEPS FOR BIS CERTIFICATION

• Step 1 – Perform Testing: Conduct testing of the product in India or in-house as per the applicable Indian Standards.
• Step 2 – Prepare Application: Submit an application to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for the grant of a license, including the test report from Step 1.
• Step 3 – BIS Application Review: BIS reviews and accepts the application, followed by a visit to the manufacturing facility.
• Step 4 – Plant Audit and Sampling: During the plant audit, BIS officials draw samples and send them to a lab in India for further testing.
• Step 5 – License Grant: If the test results from the samples and the plant quality audit are satisfactory, BIS grants the license to mark the product with the ISI mark. The license number is issued after paying the marking fee and license fee.
• Step 6 – License Validity and Renewal: The initial license is valid for 1–2 years and can be renewed for up to 5 years by paying the advance marking fees.
• Timeline: The process typically takes 20–30 days, though it may vary depending on the product.

PROCEDURE FOR ISI MARKING

• Normal Procedure:
  • The client fills out the application form and submits it to the nearest BIS branch along with the required certification fees.
  • BIS officials visit the factory to evaluate the facilities and manufacturing processes.
  • During the visit, the accuracy of the manufacturing process and the manufacturer's capability to produce adequate quantities are assessed.
  • Product samples are sent to BIS-approved laboratories for testing.
  • Once testing is completed, the laboratory releases the test reports.
  • Based on the test reports, BIS grants the certification to the company.
• Simplified Procedure:
  • The applicant takes the product to a BIS-approved laboratory for testing and submits the test report along with the certification application.
  • The laboratory must be approved by BIS, and the sample must be accompanied by the certification application.
  • If the test reports and other documents are satisfactory, BIS grants the certification after a factory visit.
  • The applicant can also get the application and documents attested by a chartered engineer and submit them to BIS for certification.

• Product Standards: Verify that your product fulfills all technical criteria and performance expectations specified in the applicable Indian Standards.
• Site Evaluation: Ready your facility for a visit from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) inspectors by ensuring proper infrastructure, machinery, and skilled staff are in place.
• Documentation System: Create and upkeep a well-organized record-keeping system to store product details, test findings, quality protocols, and other pertinent information demonstrating compliance.
